The design and the realization of the inferior architecture of modern opera houses and theaters tend to get standardized and to follow the same aesthetic trend. This leads to a poorer acoustic performance of these halls. The historical development of the halls’design is a move from a uniquely aesthetic and visual approach to a pragmatic reproduction of the most successful models, then to theorization and to miscellaneous modelizations in acoustics. First came small scale acoustic hard models, then computer models. Beside their ability to reliably predict acoustic quantities, the true advantage of computer models is their flexibility. They adjust well to the need for dialog between designers, in particular between acousticians and architects. This is the great revolution of the new millenium, it will certainly make it possible to reintegrate the richness of ancient halls’ architecture, by reintroducing patterns favouring the acoustic qualities displayed by some of these halls. |
